From mid September to November, the forests of Scotland become picture postcards for those who love to explore nature. Perthshire is known as 'Big Tree Country' and you will find it is spectacularly colourful in autumn, but don't overlook the Scottish Borders, Central Scotland, Aberdeenshire and the Highlands which also have some superb areas of forest.

As daylight grows shorter in the autumn, it can be the perfect time to see the Northern Lights (also called the Aurora Borealis). The darker skies give you a better chance of seeing these colourful 'merry dancers'. Or maybe you would just like to gaze at the stars away from the brightness of the city lights. Numerous areas in Scotland have 'Dark Sky' status including Wester Ross in the north-west Highlands and the Galloway Forest in Dumfries & Galloway. The Tomintoul and Glenlivet area of the Cairngorms is the most northerly Dark Sky Park in the world (and the darkest in the UK).
