The Borders are rich in having a variety of gardens.
Dawyck Botanic Gardens, Stobo. Beautiful collection of trees and shrubs in extensive landscaped grounds. Part of Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. Guided walks throughout the season. Open daily February to November.
Kailzie Gardens near Peebles. Stunning collection of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Walled garden, Laburnum Walk, Rose Garden and Wild Garden. Open daily all year.
Close to Melrose near St Boswells, are Mertoun Gardens. This 26 acre garden overlooks the River Tweed and has an interesting mix of trees, plants and shrubs. It is most well-known for its extensive walled kitchen gardens which generate a huge quantity of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Open April to September.
Close to the town of Melrose you can find the magical and romantic Abbotsford, a mini castle that literally sprang from the imagination of one of Scotland’s favourite writers, Sir Walter Scott. In addition to visiting the castle interior, you can see where Sir Walter penned his famous novels and walk around the beautiful walled garden and grounds.
