The farmland and mudflats on the Solway shore are full of birds in winter, including barnacle geese, pink footed geese, pintails and birds of prey. In spring, see lapwings, curlew and snipe display on the wet meadows and marsh.
B&Bs near RSPB Mereshead - Southpark House, Dumfries
Enjoy spotting red deer in their natural environment in the Galloway Forest Park. Around 60 red deer live here and you can observe them from the viewing area and hide. Open all year. Admission is free. Rangers are on hand April - August. Look out for other wildlife including birds of prey such as buzzards. The Range is situated off the A712 between Newton Stewart and New Galloway.
B&Bs near Red Deer Range - Southpark House, Dumfries
This is the most southerly point in Scotland. Excellent views from the cliffs over the Solway Firth and Irish Sea to the Isle of Man. Thousands of breeding seabirds. Best time to visit is April to July.
