Scotland's Best B&Bs
From farm to fork, you can enjoy the best local produce which Angus has to offer. Newton Farm Holidays & Tours makes the perfect base with its 4 Star GOLD B&B accommodation featuring an ensuite guest room for up to 4 people - ideal for families! Sophie Thompson stayed there and put together this blog for us about the delicious local food and drink you can sample in the area.
I’m feeling totally refreshed after a good night’s sleep in the Farmhouse Guest Room at Newton Farm Holidays and Tours. I’m taking this rare opportunity to relax in bed and take in the breath-taking view of the Angus countryside. After a quick flick through the Scottish lifestyle magazines in my room, I’m ready for a day of exploring .... but first, breakfast!
Taste of Angus Breakfast
I go through to the Edwardian dining room; the breakfast table is laid and Farmer Lou is there to greet me. She talks me through the options, there’s so many and they all sound amazing, from Scottish pancakes served with local berries to Smoked Scottish Salmon!
I’m going to start with a bowl of traditional Scottish Porridge with a drizzle of local honey followed by a Newton Farm Signature Taste of Angus Full Scottish Breakfast to set me up for the day! My porridge is so creamy and luxurious, it’s made with whole milk from the local dairy. The honey is harvested from the Hives that are kept at Newton on the estate. The full Scottish breakfast features free range eggs from the farm, their yolks are a beautiful bright orange colour, the meat is from the local butcher and the butter is churned by the local dairy. Breakfast at Newton Farm was outstanding and a true showcase of local produce. It’s an authentic farm to fork dining experience.
Newton Farm grow Barley which is harvested and sold to be used to produce whiskey and beer. Potatoes and Peas are also grown on the farm. Other seasonal produce from the farm includes; free to roam grass fed Lamb and Goat meat.
This summer will see the launch of Newton Farm’s new food and drink experience venue - The Cart Shed. These pre-bookable experiences will showcase farm and local produce taking visitors on a unique flavour journey!
The Gin Bothy Experience
After breakfast we headed to The Gin Bothy Experience for Gin Tasting! The experience tells the story of the Gin Bothy, the authentic production process, and the Scottish heritage that defines the product.
The Bothy Larder has a gorgeous selection of artisan products and local produce which make a perfect gift for loved ones or a treat for yourself.
Afternoon Tea at Glamis Castle
Farmer Lou and I headed to Glamis Castle for a luxury Scottish Afternoon Tea in the Victorian Kitchen Restaurant. It was absolutely stunning, it looked and tasted amazing and we felt like royalty!
Forbes of Kingennie Country Resort
For dinner I headed to Forbes of Kingennie Country Resort which is a 10-minute drive from Newton Farm. The Scullery Restaurant boasts lake side views offering an immersive dining experience. The menu showcases local produce such as; the world-famous Arbroath Smokie, outdoor bread pork, Scottish berries, salmon and lots more. If you fancy a few drinks head to the Cairn O Mount Bar, cosy up in one of the Chesterfield snug booths by the roaring fire whilst enjoying a dram, or two! Wednesday night is burger night at Forbes, be sure to sample their goat burger which features grass fed goat meat from Newton Farm!
